The Millennial Mom’s Digest was present at the 2019 She Prevails Conference, which was held at 21c Museum Hotel in Durham, NC. The Prevailing Women’s Conference is an annual conference; put together by the Founder, Sabrina Seymore and her amazing team of prevailing women. This conference highlights women of color who are prevailing in their own lanes! This weekend long event celebrates women of color, for all that we are and all that we are prevailing to be! The keynote speaker for the event was none other than Grammy Award winning artist Letoya Luckett-Walker. LeToya, is a new doting-mommy to a beautiful baby girl named Gia, she is also a new wife; so needless to say there was A LOT of juicy new topics for us to catch up on!!!
As a new mom, the topic of “self-care” is almost laughable, right? Like when someone ask a new mom: “What do you do for self-care?” we are sliding down an extremely slippery slope when it comes to possible responses. I mean self-care can be as simple as staying hydrated…and for a new mom, even that much can present itself as a complete struggle. LeToya, gave some extremely real advice. What I love most is that her advice was truly reflective of caring for oneself. Her advice embodied what it means to do the things that literally enable us to think clearly and operate a lot better overall. Here are four super-easy-new-mom-friendly things; LeToya Luckett- Walker does to make sure she is taking care of herself:
- Find 10 minutes to get away from baby (The catch: without feeling bad)
- Don’t carry around the “mommy-guilt”…it’s heavy Sis
-Set boundaries
-Find time to be alone
I say “super easy”, but trust me; I know that managing a household, loving and caring for your new baby, and fulfilling all of your other responsibilities leaves little to no time and finding 10 minutes to be completely alone can feel like an impossible task. What I’m saying is, in the grand scheme of things applying these 4 tips is a small start! We can do small starts, right? Try starting by taking the time to breathe! I remember being in the hospital, just after giving birth and my nurse gave me some amazing advice that sticks with me to this day, she said
“It is okay to walk away if your baby is safe. Ask yourself: Is my baby fed? Is my baby dry? Is my baby safe? If the answer to all three of those is yes…it is okay to walk away and take a second.”
“It is okay to walk away if your baby is safe. Ask yourself: Is my baby fed? Is my baby dry? Is my baby safe? If the answer to all three of those is yes…it is okay to walk away and take a second.”
It’s so important for ALL mothers to hear this, to hear “it’s okay to take a second”. To know that feeling tired or defeated does not make [you] a horrible mother. Take the second. Take the time to breathe. Take the time to care for yourself. It’s okay mama.
Watch the full interview to hear more of my “New Mommy Tea” with LeToya. She also discusses some other relaxing ways to enforce self-care, some advice for new moms who are returning back to demanding jobs post-baby and takes us to CHURCH with some real talk about how important it is to talk about, think about, and view YOU in a positive manner!
